Writing Tips for Sustaining a Long Manuscript

April 9, 2025 · 5 min read

Long manuscripts fail less from lack of talent than from lost continuity. Keep a living document for character facts, timeline events, and stylistic choices. Review it before each writing session.

Separate drafting windows from revision windows. Mixing both on the same day often stalls momentum. When revising, work in passes: structure first, then sentence-level clarity, then proofing.

Protect voice by reading your work aloud. Awkward rhythm is easier to hear than to see. If a chapter feels dutiful rather than necessary, it usually is. Cut or transform it before production begins.
